Surgical Navigation Technician

Job Description

The Surgical Navigation Technician (SNT) is a specialist in Image-Guided Surgery (IGS), the use of real-time correlation of the operative field to a preoperative imaging data set that reflects the precise location of selected surgical instruments to the surrounding anatomic structures. The SNT is responsible for assisting the surgical team with preoperative imaging preparation, ensuring appropriate instrumentation, maintaining a sterile work environment, and anticipating surgeons' intraoperative needs. This person fulfilling this role must demonstrate effective troubleshooting and problem-solving methodology in a stressful and high-pressure environment. He/she consults with physicians and staff on clinical issues, such as imaging requirements, surgical approach, acquisition of necessary instruments and equipment, and the evaluation of new technologies. He/she takes an active role, anticipating surgeons' intraoperative needs with surgical planning, trajectory and spatial orientation, patient positioning, and equipment staging. He/she is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all image-guidance workstations and associated instrumentation. The SNT performs technical skills and provides assistance to the surgeons, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. This position performs similar duties in other areas of the hospital as assigned. He/she effectively interacts with patients and health care team members, while maintaining the surgical department standards; participates in surgical procedures on patients of all age groups, pediatric through geriatrics.

Responsibilities

"Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation in navigation procedures. Help train OR staff in navigation procedures. Surgical Support- Presurgically • Ensure all right instrumentation and disposables are ready for the case. • Work with Sterile Processing on instrumentation. • Ensure correct scan format) where applicable) for radiographic films is used. • Troubleshoot any communication issues between navigation equipment and other equipment. Surgical support- day of surgery • Pulls up relative images for case on PACS. • Coordinates with Radiology for x-ray tech to run C-arm/ O-arm • Provide system update and functional verification • Load scans onto system and verify scan. • Verify with surgeon needs for case- exam merging or 3D models. • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment and instrument issues. • Provide guidance and training for OR team. Surgical Support- post op • Check equipment and stow properly. • Review case and questions with OR team. Ensure proper functioning equipment. • Be proactive with on-time planned maintenance and inspections in conjunction with service contract or Biomedical services. • Monitor for software upgrade releases. Operates highly complex radiographic equipment within the operating room, selecting technical factors to ensure high-quality radiographs using the A.L.A.R.A. (as low as reasonably achievable) standards. Serves as super-user for any hybrid radiographic operating room within the department- compliance and management of equipment in the OR and/or control room as deemed appropriate. Assists in providing training or in-service related to radiation safety for surgical team. Manages department's dosimeter badge distribution and collection ensuring compliance and reducing cost where possible. Responsible for ensuring radiation/dosimeter report/ results are provided to each person in the department with validation of them receiving results. Ensure annual lead apron/thyroid shield inspection is performed on all protective equipment. Any damaged protective equipment is reported, removed from service, and replaced. Maintains current knowledge/certification Maintains supplies/inventory for department. Performs all responsibilities/duties required, as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.Assist in other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and organization. May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters."

Qualifications

• Minimum Education
• Bachelor's Degree Radiology, Other related field Preferred
• Associates Degree Nursing, Radiology, Other related field Required
• Minimum Work Experience
• 4-6 years Work related experience in an operating room Required
• Licenses and Certifications
• BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
• Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
• Must be able to return to the hospital/facility within 30 minutes of a Callback.
• Possesses a strong character and unyielding sense of integrity with "a surgical conscious".
• Exceptional attention to detail and follow through.
• Possesses ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality and accuracy.
• Good memory, able to anticipate surgeon and patient needs well in advance.
• Knowledge of surgical imaging technologies, preoperative imaging preparation, probabilistic modeling, and experience with various techniques to register patient anatomy, including identification of fiducials, anatomical landmarks, and surface and intraoperative registration techniques.
